A brand new and completely redesigned Standart - Standart

Standart issue 19 is out!

Standart is celebrating its fifth birthday with the launch of Standart issue 19. The issue beckons in a new era for the magazine, with harder-hitting articles, ambitious and experimental artwork from new illustrators and photographers, and a new approach to layout design and typesetting, all in the name of creating something progressive that moves alongside and represents the coffee world in all its diversity and colour.

"The issue beckons in a new era for the magazine, with harder-hitting articles, ambitious and experimental artwork from new illustrators and photographers, and a new approach to layout design and typesetting"

Over the past five years, the Standart team has grown from three to nine, and the company continues to flourish. In an era of digital media and instant gratification, Standart has stuck to their guns, with a completely print-only offering that celebrates the virtues of slow experience.

The redesign represents a natural evolution for Standart. It is colourful and daring, and represents the scope of our coverage, the diversity of the industry we cover, and our unique voice. We have worked with brand new photographers and illustrators to produce some of the best artwork we have have. The intention was to create original artworks that not only accompany great text, but stand alone as beautiful and significant works in their own right.

Spearheading the redesign were Standart’s founder Michal Molcan in collaboration with Creative Director Kirill Savateev and Aida Novoa and Carlos Egan of Patten Studio, the duo behind titles such as NewPhilosopher and Womankind. The team at Standart have been fans of their work for years, and the collaboration resulted in a beautiful synthesis of editorial and design work.

The redesign was planned at Standart’s annual team meeting in Barcelona in November 2019. A remote-only team, Standart only meets in person once a year, at a week-long annual meet-up in a different part of the world, to discuss the past year’s successes and failure, and to brainstorm for the future. Aside from welcoming two new team members in charge of marketing and operations, the major outcome of last year’s meeting was the rebrand and redesign.

The redesign will ensure that the stories Standart tells from across the coffee world continue to resonate and connect with readers. We continue to invest in improved materials, from paper types and ink, to ensure not only product quality, but a reduced carbon footprint.
